LEAGUE DESCRIPTIONS

T-Ball: (Ages 5 and 6. Field 8)
The Shetland League is for players new to baseball. Players will be introduced to the fundamentals of baseball mechanics and muscle memory.
Practices and games will be short and instructional. A batting T will be used for hitting throughout the season. For the 6 year olds, a coach will pitch to players the second half of the season (after 6 pitches, the T will be used). One coach is allowed in the outfield for instruction of the defense.

Pinto Coach Pitch: (Ages 7 and 8. Field 3) The Coach Pitch Division of Pinto will continue to concentrate on the fundamentals of the game including development of more advanced hitting, throwing and base-running techniques. Players will continue learning the rules of baseball for improved team play and a coach will pitch throughout the season. For the first half of the season, if needed, one coach is allowed in the outfield for instruction of the defense.

Pinto Kid Pitch: Ages 7 and 8. Field 7) The Kid Pitch Division of Pinto is for players that have advanced fundamental baseball skills and are moving toward playing “real” baseball (the defense must contain runners to stop play and rules of the game are more essential). The season begins with coach pitch but after the spring grapefruit season, players begin to progressively pitch in games. No coaches are allowed in the field of play for defensive purposes.

Mustang: (Ages 9 and 10. Field 4) This is REAL baseball for 9 and 10 year olds. Player pitch is used for the entire season. Drills and practices focus on base running, defensive techniques and fundamental hitting. Players are exposed to a range of defensive positions during games. In the final month of the spring season, players begin to experience lead-offs
and steals, with pitchers learning how to hold runners.

International (Ages 9, 10 and 11. Field 2) The International League is designed to ease the transition for players between Mustang and Bronco, with a continuing focus on baseball fundamentals and skill development. This is a Mustang league under Pony designations, and is comprised primarily of 10 year olds and a few 11 and 9 year olds. Fall continues to be the season when players move up into a new designation with a stronger focus on fundamentals and skills. In the Spring Season, players experience lead-offs, base-stealing, holding runners and balks.
With more children coming to Medlock Park to play baseball, the International League enables DHYS to continue its emphasis on placing players in an environment where they can enjoy playing baseball with kids who have a similar level of skill development, without feeling either intimidated or unchallenged.

Bronco (Ages 11 and 12. Field 1) Full-on baseball, all the time. Players in Bronco (12 year olds and the most advanced 11 year olds) gain more experience in advanced skills and strategy. For the first time, runners can advance on dropped third strikes and lead-off from third base during the entire season. These players have the strength and maturity to play more competitive and faster-paced games. They learn the importance of the small details and mental preparation.

Pony (Ages 13 and 14. Field 6) Players continue to develop baseball skills as they enter their teen years. Spring season games and practices are scheduled to avoid conflicts with middle school and JV programs, to encourage participation in both school and DHYS baseball. This is a good complement for school baseball, as well as an alternative for players who
want to participate at a recreational level only.

Colt (Ages 15 and 16 - Field 6) FALL ONLY - subject to sufficient enrollment. A great option for players who want to play fall ball. Games are played against several competitive parks in the metro area.
