2006 DHYS Summer Tournament Teams recap...

8U Lumber Co.

The Lumber Co.--Disney "Turn Back the Clock" Tournament Champions!

The Lumber Co. played in the Disney "Turn Back the Clock" Tournament in Disney World in Orlando, Florida, during Labor day weekend.

Using its dominant offense and stifling defense, the Lumber Company breezed through pool play by beating teams from San Juan, Puerto Rico, South Jersey, New Jersey, and Union Park, Florida by scores of 12-2, 8-3, and 12-2 respectively. By going 3-0 in pool play, the Lumber Co. advanced to the Championship game held on Labor day.

The Lumber Co. played a familiar foe in the Championship game, the Mount Paran Titans (a team the Lumber Co. scrimmaged twice while getting ready for the tournament). The Lumber Co. broke out to a quick 5-0 lead, but Mt. Paran hung tough, as always. The game was a back and forth affair, with very high quality of play throughout by both teams. However, the Lumber Co. rallied late in the game, and won the Disney "Turn Back the Clock" Championship game 10-8!

With that, the Druid Hills Lumber Co. ended its season as one of the top 8U team in DHYS history, finishing with a 15-7 record, including a Georgia State Championship and the Disney Turn Back the Clock championship. What a great season it was, and thanks to all the Lumber Co. parents and players who made it possible

Larry Hutson Tournament--Shaw Park
The Lumber Co. began its tournament play in the Larry Hutson Tournament at Shaw Park. In its first game, the Lumber Co took on the host team, the undefeated Shaw Park Storm (the eventual tournament champion). The Lumber Co. slugged itself out to an early 4-0 lead, after the first inning. However, we were unable to hold on to the lead and lost 18-10, despite hitting two home runs and plenty of other hard hit balls to all parts of the field. In our next game, the Lumber Co. hit 3 towering home runs and defeated a tough Midway team 11-8. In bracket play, the Lumber Co. bats were silent for most of the game and we struggled in the field, losing to the Acworth Orange 10-5 (eliminating the Lumber Co. from the tournament).

West Cobb Classic—Powder Springs
The Lumber Co. next played in the West Cobb Classic, which featured 14 of the top Pony teams in the State. We broke out our big sticks, blasting a mammoth grand slam and a three run homer, and our big gloves (shutting out our opponents!), beating Bill Arp 10-0 in our first game in pool play.

In our second pool game, the Lumber Co. had a TREMENDOUS offensive explosion, hitting 3 home runs and pounding numerous extra base hits, in what was likely one of the highest scoring games in DHYS tournament history. The Lumber Co. scored the 5 run maximum in every inning and 10 runs in the open inning en route to a 35-20 victory over Powder Springs. With that victory, the Lumber Co. sealed a first place finish in its Pool and headed into bracket play.

In our first game of bracket play, the Lumber Co. picked up where it left off, scoring the 5 run maximum each of the first 3 innings, winning 16-6 over Boundary Waters. Excluding open innings, the Lumber Co. has now had 8 consecutive innings scoring the 5 run maximum (i.e., not getting 3 outs).

Next, the Lumber Co. played very tough defense, and despite not hitting a home run in a game for the first time this season and having its 5-run maximum streak end at 9, the team pounded Newnan 13-3. The Lumber Co. thus advanced to the semi-finals of the West Cobb Classic, by beating each of its first 4 opponents by ten runs or more (winning 3 games by the 10 run rule).

In the Semi-finals, the Lumber Co. jumped out to an early 10-1 lead over the host team, Powder Springs (the eventual champion of the West Cobb Classic), but was unable to hang on, and lost 17-16 in the bottom of the 6th. Despite the loss, it was a very solid, and often dominating, performance by our 8 and under team in just our second tournament.

PONY District Tournament
Lumber Co. finishes 2nd in Districts and advances to States!!
In our opening game in the District tournament, we faced a familiar foe, Powder Springs Indians Gold, in a rematch of the West Cobb Classic Semi-Final game. Prior to the game, Powder Springs strategically decided to go with a 9 player batting order against the Lumber Co.’s 12 player batting order. In what may have been the most exciting game of the summer, both teams played great baseball, in a back and forth game. Trailing in the 5th inning, the Lumber Co. came back and held a narrow 17-16 lead going into the open inning. Powder Springs scored 5 runs in its half of the 6th. In the bottom of the 6th, the Lumber Co. plated 2 runs and had the tying run at the plate, before flying out to the outfield and dropping the game 21-19. After the game, both umpires said it was the best-played game they had seen all year.

In our second game at Districts, the Lumber Co. started slow (leading only 8 to 6 after 3 innings) and then our bats and gloves heated up and we handled Boundary Waters 29-10.

In the District Semi-Final game, the Lumber Co. beat Powder Springs Indians Blue 25-15 to advance to the Championship Game.

In the Championship game, played minutes after the Semi-Final game, the Lumber Co. fought hard but lost 20-13 to the fresher Powder Springs Indians Gold and took home the runner’s up medal. With that 2nd place finish in Districts, the Lumber Co. advanced to the State tournament in Newnan.

PONY State Tournament
Druid Hills Lumber Co. wins the State Championship!!
The Lumber Co. started out very strong in its state tournament run with a 19-5 victory over the host team, Newnan. The Lumber Co. played extremely solid defense (holding Newnan scoreless in every inning except one) and also hit the ball very well.

In its second game, the Lumber Co. took on the District 1 champs, Pike County. The Lumber Co. lived up to its name, bashing 6 home runs, and numerous other extra base hits, for a dominating 26-12 victory.

Next, the Lumber Co. played Winston for a trip to the State finals. The Lumber Co. jumped out to a 16-6 lead, but Winston didn’t give up and fought back. Winston pulled to within 1 run in the bottom of the 6th with the tying run on third, but the Lumber Co.’s defense held firm (capped by a spectacular diving defensive play by the Lumber Co. pitcher), and the Lumber Co. pulled out a 20-19 victory over Winston to advance to the State Finals.

In the State Finals, the Lumber Co. played probably its best game of the season, playing suffocating defense and lethal offense, while destroying Winston 16-4 in 4 innings. With its victory, the Lumber Co. won the Georgia State Championship (the first DHYS Pinto Georgia State Championship in recent memory)!

The Lumber Co.’s record to date is 11-5, with 9 of those victories coming by 10 runs or more.

13U Rockets

SMOLTZ- GRISSOM WOOD BAT CLASSIC
DRUID HILLS ROCKETS TIE FOR THIRD
The Druid Hills Rockets, competing as a 13U all-star team for the first time, tied for 3rd place in the Smoltz-Grissom Wood Bat Classic during the Memorial Day weekend.

The Rockets finished the tournament with a 3-2 record while scoring at tournament leading 43 runs in two days of competition. In addition to leading the tournament in average runs scored, the Rockets also had the highest run differential between runs scored and runs allowed.

Although the tournament indicated that each team would play one pool game on Friday night and two games on Saturday, the Rockets instead played three games on Saturday. Their first game came against the Fayette Wildcats in a 14-0 win. Their lone loss on Saturday was an extra-inning "International Rule" tie breaking game against Home Plate Baseball Academy.

Sunday's single-elimination bracket games finished with a hard fought 7-5 loss in the semi-finals to the Fayette Tar Heels. Our congratulations to the Pensacola Crusaders, the top USSSA AA team in North Florida, who went on to beat the Fayette Tar Heels in the championship game.

The Rockets are composed of Nick Blake, Alex Fowler, Michael Frechette, Raymond Glier, Satrick Green, Ryan Holmes, Robbie Martin, Sam Newman, Philip Poole, Ryan Spears, Jake Strickland, Foster Thomason and Jacob Fortenberry. Coaches of the Rockets are Dave Fowler, Mark Spears, Bob Martin, Dee Strickland, and Philip Poole.

12U Lightning

With some great pitching, solid defense, and some good batting by the whole team including 5 home runs by Ryan Brennan, the Bronco 12U Lightning have reached the championship game of the Shaw Park tournament tonight at 6:30.

The kids are having a lot of fun playing some solid baseball with a 9-3 record so far on the tournament trail. This Friday night at 7:00 and Saturday at 10:45, we play at Webb Bridge Park in Alpharetta at the Cooperstown Warm-up- Battle of Webb Bridge tournament.

The Pony District tournament starts on June 25th at Clarkdale park in Austell. The top 3 teams will play in the state tournament on July 5th.

LIGHTNING WINS SHAW PARK TOURNAMENT

The DHYS Lightning 12U team won the Larry Hutson Invitational Tournament at Shaw Park over the NYO Warriors in 8 innings. Ryan Brennan hit his 7th home run of the tournament along with home runs by John McKinney and Daniel Morris (Daniel's first home run ever) in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game and get us into extra innings). Drake Henke drove in Ryan Brennan from third for the winning run in the bottom of the 8th to win it. Our defense and pitching was stellar in an incredibly exciting, well played game by both teams. We are currently 10-3 in tournament play, having a great time.

The team has picked up strength with each game as we continue to get the job done.

12U Lightning Wins the State Championship!
(A report from Danny on the road to Cooperstown)
We are about 100 mi. From Richmond after winning the pony 12U bronco state championship last night 14-6. After taking a 7-0 lead in the second inning, the bottom fell out on our pitching staff and Bill Arp team #1 came back with 6 runs. We were not going to give in at this point and our guys came back with a powerful 7 run 6th inning to take the championship and avoid another game tonight.

The Lightning really dominated this tournament once again with very solid defense, powerful bats and some very gutsy pitching. Just thought you might want this for the website as our guys head to Cooperstown next week. We ended our tournament season with a strong19-7 record, a great team effort.

11U Thunder Updates to come

10U BombersEARLY BIRD TOURNAMENT
Howdy summer baseball fans! The 10U Druid Hills Bombers started the summer off nicely with a third place finish at the Southwest Early Bird Classic. The tourney had 7 teams including the Powder Springs Knights, the Powder Springs Longhorns, the Rehoboth All-Stars, the Southwest All-Stars, the Douglas County 10's, the Douglas County 9's and the Bombers.

The Bombers started out with a big pitching performance by Aaron Schunk and an 18-0 win over Southwest. The next game saw Jack Brozek's pitches keep the Powder Springs Knights fooled and a dramatic last-out relay from Patrick Wilkerson in right field to Josh Gaul at third to cather John Michael Boswell who tagged out the potential tying runner! (Bombers 7 - Knights 6)

After the two games of pool play, we matched up with Southwest again and Luke Bumgardner went yard to left and bounced a ground rule double over center field in route to a 15-5 win.

In the semi-final game we faced the Knights again and, in a great pitching and defensive game by both teams, came up short 5-3. The entire team hit very well, winding up with a .590 batting average! Nice job Bombers!!

SUMMER SLUGFEST TOURNAMENT

The Bombers again traveled to Austell for their second summer tourney - the Summer Slugfest (Winston All-Stars, Kennesaw Broncos, Hopewell Titans, Southwest All-Stars, Powder Springs Longhorns, Powder Springs Knights, and Druid Hills Bombers).

Our first game was against our growing nemisis the PS Knights. The Bombers came out flat in this one and fell 11-4. Pool play game 2 was against Hopewell and the Bombers clawed their way to a 10-9 win. Tournament play matched us with Kennesaw and the Bombers walked away with a 16-6 win. Our next contest was against the top seed PS Longhorns a game the Bombers won 14-6.

This set up the Championship Game against Winston. The Bombers played great and had a 8-6 lead in the 5th inning when the ump called the game. The Winston coaches argued the official time and it was determined that we had to start the next inning. We added a run, but Winston came back and won 10-9. The boys did an amazing job as runner-ups and outstanding tourney defensive plays were turned in by Cole Chisholm, Jonathan Cooper, Michael Boden, and Michael Segerman.

SHAW PARK LARRY HUTSON INVITATIONAL

The Druid Hills Bombers finished the Larry Hutson Invitational at Shaw Park with a 2-2 record against some of the strongest competition they have faced this summer. This was also the largest tourney to date, with 13 teams in the 10U division.

Pool play game 1
- a hard fought 10-7 loss to the Oregon Park Green. Pool play game 2 - a back and forth affair with an 8-7 win over the very stubborn Buckhead Allstars White team.

Tournament play first game
- Bombers 12 - NYO Mavericks 11 in the biggest kid-pitch come from behind win for this assembled team!!! With the score 11-3 in favor of the Mavericks after the top of the third inning, the Bombers plated 5 runs in their frame to make it 11-8. Aaron Schunk pitched shutout innings in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings, and in the bottom of the 6th, the Bombers scored 3 runs to tie the game at 11. Jack Brozek shut down the NYO hitters in the extra 7th inning and, with a runner on first and second, Josh Gaul hit a ball down the third base line. The Maverick 3rd baseman stepped on the bag for the force out and overthrew 1st base. Cole Chisolm rounded second and headed for third where and the ball was returned over the third baseman's head allowing Cole to score and allowing the Bombers to move into a quaterfinal match-up with the #1 seed Oregon Park Blue.

Jack Brozek took the mound for the Bombers in this contest and pitched a complete game doozie! The Bombers plated the first run and held a 1-0 lead after one. Oregon Park took a 2-1 lead in the third amid great defensive plays on both sides. The Bomber hitters were making contact with the ball, but were not finding the gaps. A couple good hits and a couple miscues allowed OP to add 5 in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. In the fifth, the Bomber bats woke up, capped with a bases loaded inside the park home run by Michael Boden - making the score 7-6 . Brozek held the OP batters at bay one more time but the Bombers could not cross the plate. We lived and died by the one-run game this tournament, but a fantstic effort by all.

The Bombers are now have an 8-5 record on the summer season.

9U Storm

SHAW PARK LARRY HUTSON INVITATIONAL

In their 1st tournament game of the summer, the Storm overcame a slow start to rally and defeat the Dawson County All Stars by a score of 14-10. Timely hitting and aggressive base running helped propel the Storm to victory after falling behind 5-0 in the first inning. The Storm followed their victory with the second game of their Saturday doubleheader.

Facing a tough Eastside squad, the Storm battled fatigue and Eastside's bats and had the game knotted at 7 in the 2nd inning. But Eastside rallied with several "seeing-eye" pop flies and grounders and the Storm were defeated 18-9.

In their final game on Sunday, the Storm fell to Oregon Park's top all star team by a score of 14-4.

WILLS PARK Scrimmage

In a tune up for the Wills Park Shootout, the Storm hosted the Wills Park Warriors at Medlock Park. In a great game that saw lots of hits, the Storm battled from a 15-10 deficit in the last inning to cut the lead to a single run before Wills Park made a spectacular catch to seal their 15-14 victory over the Storm.

WILLS PARK SHOOTOUT

The Storm faced an extremely tough opponent in their opening game at the Wills Park Shootout, falling to eventual tournament champion, the Oregon Park Wildcats, 13-2.

The next morning the Storm got off to a slow start, falling behind to Coal Mountain by a score of 7-3. But the Storm's bats came alive as they rallied and charged to a 10-7 lead in the bottom of the last inning. But the scrappy Coal Mountain team's aggressive baserunning created havoc for the Storm, who fell 11-10 in a dramatic final frame.

The Storm played later that afternoon, facing a tough Sandy Springs All Star team. With excellent pitching and defense, the Storm had the game knotted at 3 apiece heading into the 4th inning. Sandy Springs charged ahead and built a lead before the Storm charged back once again, scoring four runs with a two out, 6th inning rally to force the game into extra innings. With a depleted and tired pitching staff, the Storm ran out of steam in the 7th, giving up a run before
falling 10-9.

Though they didn't come home with a win, the Storm more than proved their grit and determination, gaining confidence in their ability to bounce off the mat and always come back. The team is hoping that soon these tough one run losses will turn into victories.

OREGON PARK SUMMER SLAM

After falling to the Wills Park Wildcats (12-6) and the Oregon Park Vipers (9-6) in the first two contests, the Storm had it's back against the wall. But on Saturday morning they came out swinging, avenging an extra inning loss the previous week to  Sandy Springs. The Storm got the bats going early this time and jumped out to a lead and never looked back. Strong defense, solid pitching and good slugging helped the Storm cruise to a 12-6 victory.

After a brief rest, the Storm squared off against NYO's #1 team, the Bulls for the Storm's 2nd game of the day. NYO quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first, but the Storm answered the call with strong bats. The lead went back and forth the entire game and NYO entered the final frame ahead 11-7. With time running out, the Storm mounted a furious comeback, cutting the score to 11-10. With the bases loaded and two outs, the Storm batter drove a shot to deep left center that was snagged on a excellent catch by the NYO center fielder to seal the game for the Bulls.

The Storm really turned the corner in their final two games in this tournament and are hoping to carry this momentum into District play next week.
